Antique Native American / Northeastern Woodlands style birch bark covered box featuring colorful traditional porcupine quillwork decoration.
Rectangular box measures approximately 6 1/2 inches long, 5 inches deep and 3 1/4 inches high.
The lid is extensively decorated with a large central flower surrounded by smaller floral and bud motifs worked in flattened, dyed quills in white, pink/red, yellow and green. Additional quill decoration appears around the sides. The bark construction is joined and edged with natural fiber/root-type lacing.
The box shows considerable age and appears to have been well used. There are areas of missing and broken quillwork, losses and lifting/separation to the bark, wear to the corners and edges, discoloration, looseness and deterioration to some of the lacing, along with other typical age wear. The interior remains unfinished and clearly shows the bark construction. Please examine photographs carefully for condition.
Exact age, maker and tribal affiliation are unknown. The materials and construction are consistent with traditional Northeastern Woodlands birch-bark and porcupine-quill work, but no specific tribal attribution is being made.
