An attractive and unusual Northern Chinese traditional bamboo birdcage dating from the late Qing to early Republic period.
The birdcage is constructed in the traditional circular form with finely arranged bamboo bars. Through many decades of age and use, the bamboo has developed a warm, deep colour and attractive natural patina, giving the piece considerable character.
The upper section is particularly decorative. The radiating bamboo roof is centred by a substantial circular brass mount decorated with four dragons, arranged around the centre. The four-dragon decoration provides a distinctly traditional Chinese auspicious character.
The upper carrying and suspension fittings are also made of brass, including the large and elegantly shaped hanging hook. The brass fittings have developed a naturally aged surface and patina which complements the warm appearance of the old bamboo.
The overall form is characteristic of the traditional Northern Chinese style of birdcage, associated with China’s long-established culture of keeping and displaying songbirds.
The combination of the finely constructed bamboo body, decorative four-dragon brass top mount and large brass hanging hook makes this a particularly attractive example, suitable both for collectors of traditional Chinese objects and as a decorative historical piece.

Condition
Considering its age, the birdcage is generally well preserved. Both the bamboo and brass fittings display attractive natural ageing, patina and signs of long-term use.
Upon visual inspection, approximately two or three bamboo bars around the door appear to have been replaced at a later date.
Other minor signs of age, wear and use are present and are consistent with an antique object of this period.
