Rare antique Norwegian brass Primstav perpetual calendar / paper letter knife associated with renowned Norwegian jeweler David Andersen of Christiania.
The piece is engraved on both sides with traditional Norwegian Primstav calendar symbols. One side is marked “SOMMER” (Summer) and the opposite “VINTER” (Winter), with numerous symbols representing traditional feast days, saints’ days and seasonal markers. The graduated markings are part of the Primstav calendar system rather than a conventional ruler.
The ornate decorative terminal features raised scrollwork and a central medallion. The piece also bears wording associated with David Andersen’s Christiania workshop.
David Andersen established his jewelry and metalworking business in Christiania in 1876. The Christiania marking places this piece within the early history of the firm, before the company became known as David-Andersen after David Andersen’s death in 1901.
The brass shows an attractive aged patina with tarnish, surface spotting, scratches and general wear consistent with age and use. Please examine all photographs carefully.
An unusual and highly collectible piece of Norwegian history combining traditional folk calendar symbolism with the work of one of Norway’s most important historic jewelers.
