🏆 ANTIQUE RUSSELL BARLOW • ORIGINAL BONE • CLASSIC R-ARROW BOLSTERS 🏆
Offered is a wonderful old Russell single-blade Barlow, an honest survivor from one of the most historic names in American cutlery.
This example features genuine old bone handles, long steel bolsters bearing the famous R pierced by an arrow trademark, steel pins and the straight-line RUSSELL tang stamp.
Based on the early construction and markings, I believe this knife dates approximately c.1900–1930.
🇺🇸 A LITTLE RUSSELL HISTORY
The John Russell Cutlery Company traces its beginnings to Greenfield, Massachusetts in 1834 and became one of America’s important early cutlery manufacturers.
Russell began producing its American Barlow during the 1870s, and the distinctive R-and-arrow bolster trademark became synonymous with the Russell Barlow. Today these old knives remain tangible survivors from the early American cutlery industry.
🔪 EXCEPTIONAL OLD-KNIFE MECHANICS
This is where this particular Russell really impresses.
The heavy carbon-steel blade has STRONG SNAP and a STRONG HALF-STOP—excellent walk-and-talk for an antique working knife of this vintage.
There is only very slight side-to-side movement when fully open.
The blade has been sharpened during its long working life and is shorter than its original profile, but importantly it remains thick and retains very good width. Rather than the thin, heavily reduced blade often encountered on old working Barlows, this one remains substantial and presents extremely well.
The blade carries an attractive, naturally aged carbon-steel patina with scattered oxidation/pitting and honest evidence of use. It has not been polished into a bright, artificial-looking finish.
🦴 BEAUTIFUL OLD BONE
The original bone has aged to a gorgeous mixture of honey, caramel and warm amber-brown tones, with the smooth pocket-worn character that only decades of genuine use can produce.
🔍 Please note there is some visible shrinkage of the bone handles away from the frame, best shown in the close spine photographs. Some degree of handle shrinkage is not uncommon on antique bone-handled knives of this age.
There are several fine age/pin hairlines visible under close inspection. I photographed these areas at extreme magnification for complete disclosure. They are considerably less noticeable to the naked eye than the macro photographs make them appear, and there is nothing that appears unstable on this knife.
✨ WHY THIS ONE STANDS OUT
The single-blade configuration gives this Russell a wonderfully clean, simple profile and is a little different from the two-blade Russell Barlows so commonly encountered.
But what really sold me on this knife is its combination of:
• Original old bone
• Famous R-arrow steel bolsters
• Straight RUSSELL tang marking
• Heavy, substantial carbon-steel blade
• Strong half-stop
• Strong opening and closing snap
• Beautiful untouched antique character
This isn’t a mint Russell—and it isn’t being represented as one.
It’s something I personally find more interesting: an authentic old American working Barlow that has clearly lived a long life, yet still has remarkably satisfying mechanics and tremendous character in hand.
