Antique Set 2 WOODEN RUSSIAN ICONS MADONNA/CHILD Gilt Wall Plaques

Genuine 19th Century litho reproductions of Byzantine icons. Genuine 19th Century lithos have been carefully glued to thick, heavy hand sawed wood backs, then coated with clear varnish lacquer and gold gilded. This was all done in the late 1800s, these are not modern pieces or reproductions.

Set of 2 icons

Icon #1, the smaller icon, is an image of Our Lady Of Vladimir. This was originally presented in 1131 by the Greek Patriarch of Constantinople to Grand Duke Yury Dolgoruky of Kiev.

Icon #2, the larger icon, is another traditional Byzantine icon image.

Size is 7.75\" long x 5.25\" wide x 7/8\" deep

This icon is quite special because the original hand sawed marks are visible on the sides of the wood, and the artist that created this special icon actually took the time to carve slanting vertical lines as additional embellishment along the wooden sides.

Excellent antique condition, no damage to either icon. Genuine very thick pieces of hand sawn hand shaped wood with applied lithos and gold gilding. As these are well over 100 years old, the shellac or lacquer coating that was applied to the top had a wonderful aged patina of alligator cracking. Surface images are NOT fragile or flaking off.

Ready to hang. Each icon has its original antique metal hanging hook and antique flat nails. Hook loops are slightly rusted from age.

Foil label on back from the Art Gallery Gift Shop that resold these in Italy, probably in the 1960s.

Highly Collectible. Rare.

This is a beautiful set, great for display and hanging on any wall.
