Condition: Pre-owned antique condition with age related wear, oxidation and surface rust
Antique Simonds Saw MFG Co. hand saw featuring a large 28 1/4 inch steel blade, coarse 5 TPI tooth pattern, decorative carved wooden handle, and original Simonds warranted brass medallion marked with the December 27, 1887 patent date.
The saw measures approximately 31 1/4 inches overall. The blade measures approximately 28 1/4 inches long and tapers from approximately 7 1/2 inches wide near the handle to approximately 2 3/4 inches wide at the tip. The coarse 5 TPI tooth pattern is consistent with a rip saw intended primarily for cutting wood along the grain.
The brass handle medallion is marked The Simonds Saw MFG CO, PAT DEC 27 1887, WARRANTED. The December 27, 1887 marking refers to the patented saw fastener design and is commonly encountered on early Simonds saws. The saw itself may date from the late 19th or early 20th century rather than necessarily being manufactured in 1887.
The wooden handle has an attractive carved leaf or wheat style decoration and retains considerable original character. The blade also retains a faint factory engraving or etching. Portions are visible but the complete wording can no longer be confidently read due to oxidation and age, so no attempt has been made to identify the exact model from the etching.
The steel blade is straight and all observed teeth are present with no missing or visibly damaged teeth. Blade shows substantial age related patina, oxidation, discoloration and scattered surface rust. Handle shows scratches, dark spots, finish wear and other signs of long term use and age. Hardware and medallion are present.
A very nice large antique Simonds woodworking saw suitable for a vintage tool collection, woodworking display, restoration project, or potential use after sharpening and servicing as needed.
