Antique Thomas Webb Harrach Bohemian Enameled Art Glass Opaline Victorian Vase:
$225.00

DETAILS ~

Condition: Good antique condition; two tiny flea bite chips visible with the naked eye (see last two pics), no cracks or repairs. Some gilding and paint loss. Some wear scratches to base and some pitting on base.

Date Range: 1880-1890

Dimensions: Height: 7 1/2”; Width (at middle/widest part): 3 1/4";  Base (across): 2 3/4"; Top (across): 1 3/8”.

Maker: Thomas Webb & Sons;

England; unmarked, not unusual for Thomas Webb.  Many vases I’ve seen from Webb’s Moroccan, none have been marked.

The diminutive footprint of this unusual and exquisite vase belies its captivating appeal and impressive origins. Its excellent quality, gorgeous enamel decoration and the rarified beauty of the pattern identify it as piece created by Thomas Webb & Sons, a leader in glass making that was originally established near Stourbridge, England in the mid-19th century. This vase dates to 1880-1890 and reflects the style influences of early Art Nouveau and the refined character of late Victorian art glass production.

Shapely and sophisticated, the vase is a diminutive hard-to-find cabinet size piece. With its base material consisting of a beautiful white glass hand painted pink (opaline effect), the piece incorporates lattice cased sections in beautiful shades of blue, pink, green and pale yellow. This stunning field of understated and luminous color is embellished with intricately-detailed hand-painted enamel and gilded imagery that echoes the patterning found in Moroccan art, architecture and furnishings.

CONDITION

In good antique condition, the vase has two small flea bite chips and no cracks or repairs. The enamel decoration is exceptionally well-preserved with only tiny bits of missing color most evident only under magnification. The most notable condition issues include the absence of gilding on the base and top rim.

This was manufactured with a hole in the base so it would need a glass insert for live flowers or simply to be used as a cabinet decoration (common for Victorians) or could possibly be a spill vase and/or had an external base at one time.  Extremely rare size, shape and condition.

Sold as pictured. No returns accepted.
