This is a beautiful antique wood picture frame with a wonderfully aged dark brown finish and extensive natural wear that has exposed the lighter cream/gold-toned underfinish beneath.
The result is a genuinely distressed surface that gives the frame a strong Victorian, primitive, folk art and old-world gallery appearance.
The frame has a simple wide cove molding with mitered corners and a narrow recessed inner edge. I especially like the irregular wear across the face, the lighter color showing through the dark surface gives it a character that would be difficult to reproduce convincingly with modern distressing.
The frame fits approximately a 10" x 14" image. Overall measurements are approximately 12" wide x 16" high based on my measurements.
The reverse shows the old wood construction clearly and retains an early twisted wire hanger attached through holes in the side rails. The back also shows remnants of the lighter original/underlying finish around the rabbet.
This frame is being sold in its naturally aged condition. There is substantial finish loss, rubbing, scratches, scuffs, small chips and exposed lighter underfinish throughout. The wear is particularly pronounced along the left side and upper rail. The mitered corners show age and use but the frame remains together. I have left the surface as found rather than attempting to refinish it.
It would be especially well suited to an antique portrait, folk art painting, landscape, botanical, needlework, primitive artwork or a dark-academia/gallery-wall display. The authentic wear gives it the kind of surface and history that only develops through many years of use.
