Antique c1750 English Pewter Hot Water Warming Plate Crown X Provenance For Sale

Antique English pewter hot-water warming plate, circa 1750, with its original 1963 British antique-dealer receipt.This substantial 18th-century pewter plate has a hollow body that would have been filled with hot water to keep food warm at the table. It has two hinged carrying handles and a filling opening at the rim. The closure/cover for the filling opening is missing.The underside bears several old pewter marks, including a clearly visible crowned X quality mark, a group of pseudo-hallmark/touch-type stamps, and a rectangular impressed mark that appears to read “SUPERFINE.” There is also another partially legible curved mark. 9.5" diameterExceptional provenance: This plate was purchased by my grandparents in England in 1963 and has remained in the family since.The original receipt is from Sydney Vaux & Son, The Antique Galleries, Ilchester, Somerset, dated August 14, 1963. The dealer was identified on the receipt as a member of the British Antique Dealers Association Ltd.The handwritten receipt describes the purchase as:
“Pewter hot water plate & small pewter plate (1750)”
with a purchase price of £3 10s 0d. The original receipt will be included with the sale. The smaller pewter plate referenced on the receipt is not included in this listing.Good antique condition considering its approximately 275-year attributed age, with authentic surface patina, oxidation, scratches, marks and wear from use. As noted, the cover/stopper for the hot-water filling opening is absent. Handles remain present. The piece has not been polished and retains its dark aged pewter surface.
