A striking and substantial antique bronze relief plaque dating back to the 19th century. This impressive piece of European decorative art features an intricate Renaissance Revival allegorical scene framed by a distinctive octagonal border.
The exceptionally detailed circular high-relief depicts the helmeted goddess Minerva—Athena in Greek mythology—leading the personification of Painting into the gathering of the Seven Liberal Arts.
The octagonal bronze plaque has a rich, dark aged patina and a dense, substantial weight. Its deeply modeled high-relief creates impressive dimension, with beautifully defined figures, flowing drapery, architectural elements, and extensive background detail. It is a wonderful example of classical allegorical art for a Renaissance Revival, Grand Tour, mythological art, or European antique collection.
Acquired from the estate of an antique dealer, this plaque retains an older inventory label dating from approximately 22 years ago. The label identifies it as a bronze plaque with a classical scene, tentatively interpreted as the “Death of Julius Caesar?” and priced at $175.
The question mark documents the dealer’s original uncertainty regarding the subject. Subsequent research and comparison with known examples have more confidently identified the composition as Minerva/Athena presenting the personification of Painting to the Seven Liberal Arts, after the Renaissance model associated with Hans Jakob Bayr.
The original dealer inventory label will be included with the plaque as part of its estate history and provenance.
