Named after St. Camillus de Lellis (the patron saint of the sick, nurses, and hospitals), the St. Camillus School of Nursing was established in 1895. It operated in direct partnership with Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, which had been founded just a few years earlier in 1889 by the first eleven Sisters of St. Joseph to arrive in the area.
The Mission: St. Camillus was a diploma-granting nursing school designed to train young women in rigorous clinical practice, sanitary science, and compassionate patient care.
The Clinical Base: Students did their hands-on training directly on the wards of Borgess Hospital. The school became highly respected throughout the Midwest for producing exceptionally disciplined registered nurses (RNs).
2. Nazareth College (1924–1992)
Located on a sprawling, beautiful campus along Gull Road in northeastern Kalamazoo (technically the village of Nazareth, which was later absorbed into the broader Kalamazoo area), Nazareth College was chartered by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1924 as a prestigious four-year Catholic liberal arts college for women.
The campus was defined by its massive, historic 237,000-square-foot Motherhouse, which featured beautiful stained glass, stunning brickwork, and a replica of Rome\'s Scala Sancta (Holy Stairs).
3. The 1972 Merger: Creating the Department of Nursing
For decades, St. Camillus operated as a specialized hospital-diploma school, while Nazareth College focused on broad liberal arts and teacher education. However, by the mid-20th century, the medical field began heavily shifting away from hospital diplomas in favor of a formalized, four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
To adapt to this changing landscape, a major transition took place in 1972:
The St. Camillus/Borgess School of Nursing officially closed its independent diploma doors and completely merged its faculty, medical legacy, and clinical curriculum into Nazareth College. This created the brand-new Nazareth College Department of Nursing Education, transitioning the historic training program into a fully accredited, four-year BSN degree.
Legacy and Closure
Nazareth College adapted significantly in its later years, famously opening its doors to male students in 1971 and establishing robust night and weekend programs for working adults.
Unfortunately, due to shifting demographics and mounting financial pressures facing small, independent private colleges, Nazareth College officially closed its doors in 1992. Following the closure, the historic Nazareth Association was formed to preserve the legacy and records of the alumni, operating for nearly thirty years before sunsetting in 2021.
Today, while the grand old Motherhouse and several campus buildings were sadly demolished in recent years, the medical instruments, historic photographs, and nursing memorabilia from the St. Camillus and Nazareth College nursing programs are preserved by the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, serving as a permanent testament to the pioneers who built Kalamazoo\'s early healthcare infrastructure.
