DC COMICSDAN MORAHIGHLY COLLECTABLE SUPERGIRL (2026) MOVIE VARIANT!In late 2022, Warner Bros decided to consolidate both creative and business control of DC's cinematic ventures under one roof. Producer Peter Safran and film director James Gunn were hired to helm the newly christened DC STUDIOS, and a relaunch of DC's live action DC Universe was theirs to oversee. On January 31st, 2023, James Gunn made his first public announcement to inform fans of what the plan was -- an initial slate of films that together would be the Chapter One of the new DCU. This Chapter he named "Gods and Monsters".
At the forefront of the new DCU would be DC's biggest characters. Superman, Supergirl, Batman, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman were positioned as the four tentpoles of the new venture, with other characters like the Creature Commandos, Peacemaker and Booster Gold rounding out the smaller corners of the new fictional Universe he intended to develop. Since then, there have been additions, subtractions, and other changes to the forthcoming slate. Two live-action films, Superman (2025) and Supergirl (2026), have been released, as well as two live-action HBO Max streaming series, Peacemaker (2025) and Lanterns, which premiered in August 2026.
Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock in the titular role, dropped in June 2026 in a story inspired by the DC Comics' maxiseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2021-2022) by writer Tom King. The notorious Czarnian intergalactic bounty hunter, Lobo (Jason Momoa), was also introduced in the movie. Unlike Superman, Peacemaker and Lanterns, Supergirl didn't thrill audiences as the studio hoped, but the film's contribution to the flesh-out the greater DC Cinematic Universe as well as its introduction of key characters who will continue to play even more important roles in its future cannot be over-stated.
DC Comics celebrated the addition of Supergirl to the new DCU with movie-themed Variant Covers across a number of their current series, with Batman/Superman: World's Finest (Vol 1) enlisting superstar artist DAN MORA to deliver the most prominent of them all. Mora's awesome cover art depicting Supergirl, Krypto and the character of young Ruthye (introduced in King's Woman of Tomorrow) dropped with Issue #52 of the Mark Waid-written series, and for Mora collectors and Supergirl or DCU fans, it's nothing short of a 'Must-Have'.
