BLANQUITA SUAREZ :SPANISH ACTRESS & SINGER : RISQUE PERFORMER : RARE : RPPC 1917:
$45.00

This listing is for a rarereal photo postcard featuring Spanish actress Blanquita Suárez (1880–1956). The image shows her in an ornate theatrical costume, adorned with elaborate jewelry, bracelets, and an extravagant feathered headdress. She sits regally in a carved armchair, gazing off with a dramatic, stage-like presence. Blanquita Suárez, born in Barcelona in 1880, was a celebrated Spanish stage and film actress and singer during the early 20th century. She became known for her zarzuela performances (a Spanish light opera blending spoken and sung scenes), revue theater, and cabaret-style shows. Suárez was admired for her beauty, charisma, and a bold stage presence that often pushed the boundaries of the conservative norms of her day. She was frequently considered risqué in her performances, sometimes shocking critics and audiences with her daring costumes and suggestive roles. Professionally, she was a fixture of Barcelona’s and Madrid’s entertainment scenes, appearing in operettas, variety shows, and vaudeville. Personally, Suárez lived in the public eye and was admired not only for her artistry but also for her flamboyant lifestyle, which drew both admiration and controversy. She remained a popular figure until her death in 1956, remembered as one of Spain’s most glamorous and daring actresses of the early 20th century. Suarez was the subject of several drawings and a painting by Picasso. The reverse of the postcard bears a Spanish red 10 centavos stamp with a cancellation mark dated 1917.A translation of the handwritten Spanish message reads:“A sun quite common, lost, congratulations in the orchestra hall of disillusion.”The message seems poetic and playful, likely written in a familiar or humorous tone to the recipient. The card was sent to someone in Barcelona. The card was hand-dated in 1917. The front of the postcard is a crisp, well-focused photographic portrait with excellent tonal range. The back of the card has writing and postal markings visible and an intact stamp. Overall, this postcard is in very good condition (see scans).
