APA-5 101 (1980) 8 1/2 x 11, 195 pages. Nice condition. Originally belonged to Harry Andruschak whose name is first on the roster indicating that he was a founding member of the apa and in the mailing is a 1980 postcard sent to Harry from member Mike Bentley.
Comic & film fanzine contains early BRAD BIRD work TIME AGENT GYLKIN which appears in this apa as an 8 page insert (shown above) which on page 7 states: \"was brought to you by three young entrepreneurs; David Young, Brad Bird and Mark Counts; writer, editor and artist, respectively.\" The insert is a pre-preprinted comic book 8 1/2 x 11 but I can find no copies of it on line or the North West Comics Longview, Washington given as its origin. 45 years is a long time!
Brad Bird was apparently a new member in 1980 (he would have been 23 at the time) and he is listed on the contents page and in the roster with a Longview, Washington address.
I\'ve also included scans of an odd contribution by one Steve Benoit which claims to be about a remake of DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL titled INVADER FROM BEYOND but no information on such a film can be found anywhere on line. A hoax? An unfinished film? Who knows? Plus I just noticed that the feature has a 1975 copyright but in 1980 he had no stills from the film?
Some background on APA-5 can be found at https://fancyclopedia.org/wiki/APA_5 which indicates that they think may have been defunct after 1980 although on the contents page of this mailing it lists deadlines for contributing to mailings 102 & 103. I know someone who was in APA-5 in 1982. He explained that the name of the apa came from the fact that apa\'s were just being created in the 1970s and since this was the fifth comic book apa it was named APA-5.
The roster lists 25 members who were responsible for contributing 40 copies of their contributions so therefore no more than 40 copies of this apa-zine ever existed and today I expect only the surviving former members have one, so this is exceedingly rare.
