The Naga Busuki dragon is the guardian of the sacred Mount Meru, the five peaked mountain considered to be the center of all physical, metaphysical, and spiritual universes in the Buddhist, Hindu and Jain cosmology. Representations of the dragon are used to ward off evil spirits from the home and family.
This example is about 12 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 6-1/2 inches tall. It is constructed of four separate pieces - the head, the two wings, and the body. The head and wings fit into slots in the body to complete the finished dragon. I believe Albizia is the type of wood that is traditionally used to make the dragon. This wood is very light, yet very strong - this big dragon mobile weights just 6 ounces! Separately, each wing measures about 6 inches long, the head is about 5 inches long, and the body is about 7-1/2 long.
It is in a striking black color with gold, red, white, and blue details. The horns are a bright gold, with other gold highlights as well, such as on the chest and end of the tail. As is the nature of vintage folk art - there are a number of scuffs and bumps to the dragon and some chips to the gold, though overall the dragon is entirely intact.
The head is just one piece of wood that has been carefully carved with a slightly open mouth with teeth and tongue and protruding eyes! The wings are the most colorful feature with blue, gold, white, and black feathers!
It includes a wire that has been attached at three places with a small eye hook for hanging.
