GREAT WELL KEPT CONDITION. Signed: San Ildefonso Pueblo By Blue Corn. This black-on-black San Ildefonso Pueblo pottery jar featuring a repeating matte stylized eagle feather motif. It was meticulously handcrafted by the renowned Native American artist Blue Corn (Crucita Gonzales Calabaza, 1921–1999), one of the most celebrated Southwest Pueblo ceramicists of the 20th century. Material & Technique: This jar is hand-coiled from local clay, smoothed, and coated with a refined slip. The brilliant mirror-like surface is achieved by meticulously polishing the wet clay with a smooth stone. The Black-on-Black Style: This technique involves painting precise geometric or organic patterns with a liquid matte slip over a highly polished surface. During a specialized reduction-firing process, oxygen is choked from the kiln, turning the clay a deep, uniform jet-black while preserving the contrast between the shiny and matte textures. The Feather Motif: The stylized eagle feather band wrapping around the upper body of the vessel is one of Blue Corn's signature patterns, symbolizing prayer and natural forces.
