Bodie guide sign. Up for sale today is this California highway guide sign directing travelers to Bodie. It is made to the exact standards used by the Automobile Club of Southern California (ACSC) on the auto trails and other roads throughout the American Southwest in the era before numbered highways or federal signage standards, from 1922 to 1928 or thereabouts. Bodie, California became a boom town in 1876, due to a profitable vein of gold being discovered around that time. By 1879, Bodie had a population of approximately 7,000–10,000 people, but by 1910, it had dwindled down to just 698. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and is California\'s official state gold rush ghost town. A sign just like this one was likely posted at the intersection of what is now US 395 and Bodie Road (likely the Reno Highway back then).
