Mark Twain Zephyr
As per Ivo Rutishauser: The train got its name from the route for which it was built Burlington (Iowa) - St. Louis (Missouri) via Hannibal (Missouri), Mark Twain\'s hometown. The train was ordered in March 1935 and completed in October. It was christened at Hannibal on Oct. 25, 1935, and began scheduled service two days later. The four-car articulated train rests on only 5 trucks. It consists of the combined engine / mail car Injun Joe (verbalization of the word Engine = machine), the baggage and express freight car Becky Thatcher, the buffet and seating car Huckleberry Finn, and the seating and saloon car Tom Sawyer with a viewing pulpit at the end. The whole luxury train had room for only 92 passengers. In the motor car, a Winton 16-cylinder 660 hp diesel engine drove a generator that powered the two electric motors in the foremost truck. Only this car had a caboose; therefore, at the terminus stations, the entire train had to be turned around via track wyes. After being discarded in 1958, the train was preserved, but due to many changes of ownership, its condition deteriorated massively. As of 2020, the train is owned by the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad, a tourist railroad in Trego, Wisconsin, which has restored the train to operable condition.
