HISTORY:General Choi Hong-hi(1918 - 2002) was a general in the South Korean army and martial artist who wasan important figure in the history of the Korean martial art of taekwondo. Choiis considered by many to be the "Founder of Taekwon-Do" As a child hewould start studying martial arts. At the age of 12, his father sent him tostudy calligraphy with master Han Il Dong. With this, he also began to studyTaek Kyon, an ancient Korean fighting method in which the feet were used (whichMaster Han mastered) In 1937, at age 19 in Kyoto, Japan, he met Master Kim HyunSoo, Shotokan Karate-Do sensei, who helped him earn his 1st Dan black belt inless than two years. Taek Kyon techniques in combination with Karate-Do wouldform what we know as ITF Taekwon-Do.In 1945, he enlisted in the new SouthKorean army. Upon becoming an officer, he continued to teach his martial art tohis soldiers, as well as to American soldiers on duty in Korea. During theSecond World War he was imprisoned. In order to maintain his good physical andmental health during his incarceration, he practiced karate, alone at first,and later teaching it to prison staff and other prisoners. His jailer and hiscellmate became his students, and soon after the prison had grown into agigantic dojang. He was promoted in the army, promoting the martial art that hewas developing during that time, combining aspects of Karate-Do and Taek Kyon,which he called "Taekwon-Do". Finally, he founded the Oh Do Kwan in1954, one of the 9 kwans during Korea's revival of martial arts, and waspromoted to general during the same year. In 1955, a special board of teachers,historians, and other important members of Korean society, selected the nameproposed by Choi Hong Hi. The name was Taekwon-Do. In 1959, General Choi HongHi was appointed President of the Korean Taekwon-Do Association. Seven yearslater, in 1996, he created the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF). Asthe founder of Taekwon-Do and President of the ITF, he had the opportunity toshare his art with students around the world.
