The Artist: Candelario Medrano (1918-1986) is recognized as one of the top ceramists from Mexico. From Santa Cruz de las Huertas, in the state of Jalisco, he was adopted by Julian Acero, the top ceramic toy maker in the village. He started out making small hand- made toys and whistles. He was encouraged by Jorge Wilmot, a well-known Mexican artisan, to make larger pieces. His bold, imaginative work included brightly colored churches, jet planes, whimsical castles, animals, boats, trains, buses, and cars. He often populated these pieces with happy people with expressive faces. He still remains a celebrated master of folk ceramics. Examples of his work are in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the British Museum, the International Museum of Folk Art, and his works have been in museum exhibitions worldwide.
The Sculpture: A brightly colored sculpture containing 7 figures. The train sculpture is a rare subject for this artist. It measures 12\" in length, 10\" high, and 4\" wide,
Condition: Paint remains bright and intact. See last photo for any wear - shows paint wear on top of tire, and the figure in the doorway is missing his left hand.
Provenance: No signature on this piece. Previous owners identified this as an original Medrano, purchased by them on their travels. I have little expertise, but my studies have shown this to match the artist\'s style, choice of subject matter, and coloration perfectly.
