TheD. F. Bradfordwas a rare and elegant 4-2-4T steam locomotive built in 1862–63 by Danforth, Cooke & Company for the Oregon Steam Navigation Company. Specially designed for the Columbia River’s Cascade Portage Railroad, this compact yet visually striking tank engine featured unusuallylarge driving wheelsfor high speed on short runs and atight wheelbasesuited to the line’s sharp curves.

As atank engine, it carried both water and fuel onboard, eliminating the need for a tender—ideal for the rugged 5-mile bypass around the dangerous Cascades rapids.

The locomotive’s cab proudly bore the name“D. F. BRADFORD”in serif block letters. Painted on the side of the tank was an ornateoval cartouche reading “Oregon Steam Navigation Company,”likely surrounding an emblem such as a riverboat or eagle—typical of the company\'s patriotic styling. The engine’s highly polished domes, tall balloon smokestack, and brass bell gave it a dignified presence, reflecting both its passenger duties and the prestige of its operator.

A rare example of frontier railroad engineering, theD. F. Bradfordembodied innovation, elegance, and purpose in the early Pacific Northwest.

Suitable for framing.Kept in smoke free home.
