DESIGNER HISTORY
Betty Harrington was the principal designer for Ceramic Arts Studio of Madison, Wisconsin, one of America's best-known producers of decorative ceramic figurines during the 1940s and 1950s. Her designs are recognized for their stylized forms, expressive personalities and distinctive hand-decorated finishes. Today, Ceramic Arts Studio pieces are collected for their imaginative Mid-Century designs and connection to the history of American studio ceramics.
PATTERN & DESIGN
Fighting Stallion “Lightning” is an especially dynamic Betty Harrington design, capturing the horse at the height of a dramatic rearing pose. The extended front leg, raised opposite leg and strongly arched body create a convincing impression of power and movement.
The warm golden-brown body contrasts beautifully with the dark mane, tail and hooves. Subtle molded details emphasize the stallion's musculature, while the expressive eyes and open mouth add character to the composition.
The textured brown platform provides a substantial visual foundation for the rearing horse while its wood-grain appearance complements the warm coloring of the figurine. The original factory identification on the underside is particularly desirable because it confirms the Ceramic Arts Studio design name, “Fighting Stallion (Lightning).”
