MORRISON R. WAITE was nominated at the Ohio Constitutional Convention in 1873 by President Ulysses S. Grant as Chief Justice of the United States. The Senate confirmed his appointment two days later. Waite served as Chief Justice for fourteen years and died on March 23, 1888.
Offering a 4 ½ x 7 ALS from Lyme, CT, July 30, 1883, responding to Sarah E. Bartlett’s request about a case.
Waite writes, “Your letter of the 2nd inst. Has just reached me at this place, but it is quite impossible for me to tell you when the case you refer to will be reached, as I cannot have access to the dockets of the court. The Clerk of the court at Washington can undoubtedly furnish you the necessary information if you address him at Washington.
