Vintage Peruvian Blackware Effigy Vessel - Chimu / Sicán
Beautiful vintage Pre-Columbian style blackware pottery effigy vessel, hand-crafted in the tradition of the ancient Chimu and Sicán (Lambayeque) cultures of northern coastal Peru. The vessel features a striking human effigy face surrounded by a stylized, multi-pointed ceremonial headdress/fan decoration. This iconic shape is closely associated with ancient Andean mythological iconography.
Technical & Construction Detail: True Reduction Fired Clay: This piece features a true reduction-fired black clay body, meaning the smoky gray-black finish runs all the way through the clay and deep into the interior throat of the spout. It is not artificially painted, dyed, or coated with a modern chemical wash. Handmade & Press-Molded: Built using the traditional two-part press mold system utilized by ancient Peruvian artisans.
Authentic Smooth Base: The flat bottom base is completely smooth and unmarked, showing natural, smoky "firing clouds" from the traditional pit-firing process. Overall Condition: Very Good vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or structural breaks.
Features gorgeous natural variations in the finish. There is some minor, age-appropriate fading and matte "clouding" along the lower rim, face, and headdress where the original burnished polish has softened over time. These variations are normal for traditionally fired, unglazed blackware and add to its authentic, rustic character. Please inspect all photos carefully to verify the exact condition details.
