An exceptional circa 1860 The Practical and Devotional Family Bible published by William Collins, Sons & Company, Glasgow & London. This impressive Victorian family Bible contains the Authorized King James Version of the Old and New Testaments together with the highly regarded Commentaries of Matthew Henry and Thomas Scott, condensed by Rev. John M’Farlane, LL.D.
This edition is dated 1860 (MDCCCLX) on the title page and also includes a fascinating presentation inscription dated July 2, 1860, documenting that it was presented to Mr. William Leask by the Congregation of Enniskillen in recognition of his years of dedicated service as a church deacon and precentor. This adds wonderful historical provenance and makes the Bible far more interesting than a standard Victorian family Bible.
The Bible was professionally restored in 1980 by Toronto bookbinder Séamas McClafferty. The original restoration invoice is included and notes:
* Many pages professionally repaired and/or laminated in whole or in part.
* Book rebacked in acid-free leather.
* Original spine replaced.
The embossed leather covers remain beautifully decorated with ornate Victorian tooling, while the restored spine provides excellent structural integrity. The Bible is filled with detailed commentary, parallel references, and illustrations throughout, making it both an impressive display piece and an important reference work of the period.
