Original 1851 Citadel Academy Commencement Program — Charleston, South Carolina
Offered is an original letterpress “Order of Exercises at the Annual Commencement of the Citadel Academy,” dated Thursday, November 20th, 1851, printed in Charleston, South Carolina. This is an authentic pre–Civil War document from the South Carolina Military Academy (today The Citadel), printed for the graduation exercises of only the institution’s fifth graduating class — the first class having graduated in November 1846.
What sets this piece apart is who is named on it. Two of the student orators listed went on to become significant figures in South Carolina history:
• J.P. Thomas — John Peyre Thomas, First Honor graduate of the Class of 1851, delivered both the “National Greatness” oration and the Valedictory Address here. He later became Superintendent of The Citadel (1882–1885), State Historian of South Carolina, first Secretary of the Association of Graduates, and author of the definitive History of the South Carolina Military Academy. He personally safeguarded the Corps of Cadets’ Civil War battle flag through the war.
• J.G. Pressley — John G. Pressley of Williamsburg District, who delivered the “Education” oration, went on to become a signer of South Carolina’s Ordinance of Secession.
The full program is printed in clean, fully legible type: opening prayer by the Rev. Dr. Hanckel, salutatory and orations by W.H. Wright, W.W. Veitch, J.G. Pressley, J.P. Thomas, and N.W. Armstrong (representing the Charleston, Williamsburg, Fairfield, and Barnwell Districts), the conferring of diplomas, valedictory, and benediction.
The Citadel is among the most historically significant institutions in the antebellum South — its cadets fired on the Star of the West in Charleston Harbor in January 1861, among the opening shots of the Civil War. Surviving paper ephemera from the academy’s earliest years is exceptionally scarce on the open market; the great majority is held permanently in The Citadel’s Daniel Library archives and rarely surfaces for private sale.
Condition (please review photos, sold as-is): Printed on heavy cream card stock. Scattered foxing and toning consistent with age, more pronounced along the margins. Printing remains crisp and completely readable with no loss to text. Lower edge shows old mounting remnants with minor associated paper abrasion/loss; light corner wear. Verso bears a period pencil inventory notation (“814”) from prior collection/trade handling, along with faint show-through of the printed text. A genuine 170+ year-old survivor that presents beautifully.
