Crescent MFG Co New York NY 2\" Spokeshave (Union No. 113) Scarce Early Trademark:
$40.00

Up for sale is a scarce early Crescent Manufacturing Company 2\" raised handle cast iron spokeshave with an interesting two-piece construction and equally interesting history. Crescent Mfg. Co. of New York, NY likely began as a dealer of woodworking and other edge tools made by other established manufacturers. This spokeshave is identical to the Birmingham (and later Union) model No. 113 spokeshave. It features a cast iron frame with hollow handles and a separate yolk piece, which pins the 2\" cutter in place against the spokeshave frame with a thumbscrew. Features the earlier and rarer of the two cutter trademark styles.

Condition: Fine. 90% of the original japanning is in place. Bold stamp on the 2\" cutter. Cast iron frame and yolk free of cracks and other damage. Cutter is about 2 3/8\" long.

History: Covered in \"Manufactured & Patented Spokeshave and Similar Tools\" by Thomas C. Lamond, Crescent Mfg Co, was believed to be in operation from 1907 to around 1925 and involved a Chas. Weiland, \"jobber, wholesaler, manufacturer, and importer.\" Print advertisements indicate that their tool offerings were initially purchased at municipal/government sale houses. At some point, the firm began ordering tools from the manufacturers directly and having the Crescent trademark added by the original maker or adding it themselves on arrival. The firm pivoted to automotive tools and was no longer offering woodworking tools by the 1930s. See last few photos for more info.
