Type: Elite Sword Sheath Locket / Scabbard Mount

Size: 72 mm (Total Width)

Description

This is an extraordinarily rare and elite knightly artifact from the height of the Crusades in the Levant: a masterfully crafted high-grade silver scabbard locket or upper chape fitting measuring 72mm. Recovered from a documented site within the Kingdom of Jerusalem, this luxury military fitting would have adorned the upper portion of a high-status knightly sword sheath, specifically tailored for a noble secular knight or a high-ranking officer within the military orders like the Knights Templar or Hospitaller.

The piece features a scalloped, trilobed central crest heavily decorated with an intricate, hand-engraved foliate program centered around stylized Fleur-de-lis motifs. The deeper engraved recesses are filled with an authentic medieval niello inlay—a dark, inked metallic alloy compound that provides a stark, dramatic contrast against the brilliant silver substrate. The side wings of the band feature pierced attachment holes designed to receive tiny silver rivets or pins to secure the mount directly to the leather and wood of the scabbard body.

The reverse of the fitting displays a smooth, untouched archaeological surface showing the master smith's hammer marks and structural contouring. The silver has aged beautifully, exhibiting a rich, variable toning with localized golden-brown horn-silver and dark manganese mineral deposits built up over centuries of interment in the historic soil of the Holy Land.

Authentication

The mount displays flawless diagnostic indicators of genuine medieval silver work and long-term archaeological burial. The niello inlay is ancient, showing typical microscopic shrinkage, stable crystallization, and historical wear within the recesses. Under magnification, the hand-cut engraving strokes demonstrate the telltale slight irregularities of manual chisel-work, completely matching authentic 12th-13th century Latin Kingdom metalcraft. There are absolutely no modern casting lines, acid-etching profiles, or mechanical alterations present.

Comparable Examples & References

Elite Crusader arms and decorated scabbard components are exceptionally scarce outside of institutional collections. Similar architectural styles and niello-inlaid silver metalwork from the Latin East are preserved in the permanent collections of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and the Tower of London Armouries. For deep stylistic context on Frankish metalwork and luxury knightly equipment in the Levant, refer to Jaroslav Folda's Crusader Art in the Holy Land and David Nicolle's Arms and Armour of the Crusading Era.

Condition

Superb museum-quality archaeological condition. The silver band is incredibly robust, fully stable, and retains its original structural form without crushing or significant distortion. The hand-engraved motifs and deep niello fills remain highly visible and remarkably legible. It presents an exceptional, untouched historical aesthetic that makes it an irreplaceable acquisition for the most advanced collectors of medieval militaria and Crusader history.
