This is a political poster from the 1993 Serbian Parliamentary Election. It is a striking commentary on the dire problems facing the the Republic of Serbia (then part of Yugoslavia). It is with humble thanks that I cannot fathom the political message on this poster, and I am grateful that the US does not have these types of problems en masse... yet.
But in parts of the world then as in now, this is a reality. No jingoism, no scare tactics, just a call for the people for their basic universal rights - access to food.
This poster is a vote for DEPOS, the conservative splinter of a more centrist party. Depos would come in second in the elections, but still be very integral in forming a government with the leading party, the Socialist Party of Serbia, led by Sloofferan Milošević. History has led us to the realization that even humble grass roots calls for universal rights can snowball into much darker territory years later through the folly and selfishness of former idealogues.
This is a rare authentic poster that captures a moment in time before an eventual conflict that would ultimately lead to the destruction of a nation. It is in shockingly good condition, but it does have a few points of wear that I have photographed.
