The routine is a modern, foolproof variation of the classic Three Shell Game or Find the Pea.
The magician introduces three small pillboxes. A spectator is asked to keep their eye on the single box that contains a penny. Even when the magician eliminates one box—leaving only two—the spectator is still completely unable to find the penny. In a surprise twist ending, when the final box is opened, the penny has completely vanished, and it is revealed that the boxes are full of dimes instead.
🤫 The Secret Mechanics the trick relies on specially engineered gimmicked boxes and a specific setup: The Gimmick: Two of the three boxes are gimmicked so that they can appear completely empty or make a rattling sound on command.
The Load: The boxes contain hidden compartments or slots designed to hide or hold coins (specifically pennies and dimes). The Handling: As shown in the illustrations (Fig. 1, 2, and 3) the magician uses specific grips and subtle turning movements when lifting or shaking the boxes to control whether they rattle or stay silent.
