This exquisite large hand-coiled pottery jar is crafted by Donald Chinana (1963 -2012), a respected member of the Oak Clan at Jemez Pueblo. Measuring 8 inches wide by 7 inches tall, this striking vessel showcases bold black-on-red geometric motifs, expertly painted over a naturally burnished clay surface. The interior is finished in rich red clay, and the base bears the artist’s signature.
Donald Chinana began making pottery in 1977, using clay he digs from the Jemez Reservation, natural slips and mineral paints, and the traditional outdoor firing method. A family tradition, Donald learned his craft from his mother Anacita Chinana and carries the legacy of his grandmother—he even uses her polishing stone to finish each piece. He continues the ancestral artistic lineage of his grandmother’s mother, Persingula Fragua, in both technique and spirit.
