Early 1900s Native American Indian Chief in Headdress Inkwell by Judd Mfg. I'm uncertain of the material. It is not cast iron as it is not magnetic. It seems too substantial for spelter. Perhaps bronze or some other patinated material. It weighs 3lbs, 7oz.
This piece is a top open inkwell, flipping open via a hinge at the back. The top of the headdress functions as the lid. The hinge is solid. No dents or flaws of note anywhere. This inkstand does NOT have the original glass inkpot.
The hallmark (the stretched out snake) is from the 'Judd Manufacturing Company', a high quality manufacturer of consumer decorative metal-ware goods that operated in Wallingford, CT from 1830 - 1954. They produced "Cast Iron" decorative products, such as, Doorstops, Bookends, Doorknockers, Inkwells from 1910-1930.
