Early Victorian Brass Compound Microscope – Scientific Instrument – Circa 1840: $696.54
A fine early Victorian brass compound microscope, dating to approximately the 1830s–1840s.The microscope is constructed in lacquered brass with a weighted circular base, vertical pillar, tapered optical body and adjustable specimen stage. Focusing is controlled by the large rack-and-pinion wheel, while the spring-loaded stage holds the specimen beneath the objective. An adjustable reflecting mirror below the stage directs light upwards through the specimen. This compact form of compound microscope was produced during the first half of the 19th century, before the more familiar large Victorian laboratory microscopes of the later century became standard. The instrument remains in good working order, with the focusing mechanism operating correctly and the optics usable. The brass retains a particularly attractive aged surface with mellow patination and wear consistent with its age.A lovely early scientific instrument and an excellent display piece for a collection, study or cabinet of curiosities.Measures approximately 26 cm / 10 1/4 inches tall.
