Miklavcic enlisted in the U.S. military in 1940 at the age of 20, joining thousands of recruits from Wisconsin and Illinois.

He was stationed at Wheeler Army Airfield on Oahu, Hawaii, he was heading to breakfast when the first bombs struck the barracks during the Pearl Harbor National Memorial attack.

Following the attack, he continued his service across the Pacific, maintaining airfields and participating in grueling operations during the Battle of Iwo Jima until the end of the war.
