Superb autograph note signed by the celebrated Shakespearean actress Ellen Terry (1847–1928), written in her characteristic flowing hand:

“I send you a line with the greatest of pleasure –I hope some day to visit Australia –Sincerely yoursEllen Terry”

The note is written on very thin, translucent tracing‑paper‑like stock

Beneath the signature is affixed a sepia Cinderella stamp depicting Ellen Terry — a non‑postal, philatelic label, typical of theatrical ephemera from the period. These decorative poster‑type stamps were widely used by collectors in albums and scrapbooks and add strong display appeal.

Ellen Terry was one of the most famous Shakespearean actresses of the Victorian and Edwardian stage, renowned for roles such as Portia, Beatrice, Ophelia, and Lady Macbeth.
The line “I hope some day to visit Australia” is historically resonant: Terry never visited Australia, despite repeated invitations and a substantial fanbase there. Her remark reflects a genuine but unrealised ambition.

Dame Alice Ellen Terry (Feb 1847 – Jul 1928) was an English actress of the late 19th and early 20th class="MsoNormal">One of c.2,500+ items once from the collection or dealer stock of Winifred A Myers (Autographs) Ltd, St Martins Lane, London, evidenced by the quantity of Myers pre-printed envelopes and paper folders and the general ‘presentation’ of the items, many having Myers identification notes in pencil.

Winifred Alice Myers (1909 - 1985) served as ABA (Antiquarian Booksellers Assoc) president, 1950-1952. See the ABA website for an extended article on Myers. Myers left her business, in 1985, to Ruth Shepherd, who traded from home until 2004.
