Winter, 1989.
From an exterior staircase near his Downtown Los Angeles home, Eriberto Oriol saw cops rounding up homeless Black men in the alley below.
Most people kept moving.Eriberto picked up his camera.
Taking the photograph carried risk, but he refused to let the moment disappear.
He did not create the scene. He made sure it could not be erased.
The title came later, inspired by Ice Cube—part of a generation using music to confront policing, profiling and life on the streets of Los Angeles.
Ice Cube spoke through music. Eriberto spoke through his camera.
The music told the story. The photograph became the evidence.
