The Jehovah\'s Witness bookletFascism or Freedom, published in 1938, was a powerful and widely distributed denunciation of totalitarianism by J. F. Rutherford, the second president of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. The booklet condemned totalitarian governments as satanic and specifically attacked Adolf Hitler as Satan\'s \"representative\". It was a key piece of Jehovah\'s Witnesses\' literature during a period of intense persecution under the Nazi regime.

Background

• Intense persecution:At the time of the booklet\'s publication, Jehovah\'s Witnesses had already been banned in Germany. The Witnesses\' strict political neutrality and refusal to salute the Nazi flag, join Nazi organizations, or serve in the military resulted in brutal persecution.
• Political neutrality:Jehovah\'s Witnesses believe their sole allegiance is to God and his kingdom, not to any earthly government. Their position of political neutrality is based on biblical interpretations, such as John 17:16, where Jesus says his followers are \"no part of the world\".
• Inverted purple triangle:Due to their refusal to compromise their faith, approximately 8,000 Witnesses were sent to Nazi concentration camps, where they were identified by an inverted purple triangle patch. At least 1,000 died.
