The flag is a period example of the flag flown by the Turkmen delegation at the United Nations from March to September1992. The field is nylon with a cotton header with brass grommets. The flag of Turkmen SSR was initially adopted in 1953 and used in the former Soviet Union along with the flags of the other Soviet Socialist Republics. Because Turkmen SSR was not recognized as an independent nation its flag was rarely seen outside of the USSR. This flag was made after the break up of the Soviet Union in the very short window between the country's joining the United Nations and adopting its own distinctive flag. This 4x6 foot nylon flag of Turkmenistan was acquired from Dettra Flag Company shortly before they were acquired by the Annin Flag Company in 1997. The flag is in new old stock condition and has never been displayed.
Through collecting older flags, one can get an appreciationof the history of the nation that these flags represent. While a few nationalflags are altered for artistic reasons (ie. Oman), and others are modified whennew states or provinces are added (Brazil, USA) most changes follow verysignificant political changes. The dissolution of communism in 1989/1990 notonly resulted in 15 new flags for the former republics of the Soviet Union,communist symbols disappeared from the flags of Albania, Benin, Bulgaria,Congo, East Germany, Mongolia, Romania,Yugoslavia, and others. The flags ofAfghanistan display a unique number of variations between 1974 and 2002. Nearlya dozen different flags represented that nation through its early socialistgovernment, through Soviet occupation, post-USSR government, the Taliban, theNorthern Alliance, the Islamic State, and the present government.

All items I sell are original to the statedperiod. With a few exceptions, Antique American flags can be dated by thenumber of stars. However, all 13-star flags date from the 19th orearly 20th centuries as there are few, if any, documented 13 starflags that are known to have been made during the 18th century.
