He was in particularsent to Mexico by the French Emperor to prepare the French withdrawal and alsoto convince leaders of the French Expeditionary Corps to give up the fight.After the defeat of Sedan, he also had the sad mission to represent NapoleonIII and negotiate the surrender of the French Army. He then accompanied thedeposed emperor who had been taken prisoner to Cassel until the signing of theTreaty of Frankfort.
