Outstanding large-scale hand-carved Native American figure signed “F. Healing” on the underside of the boot, attributed to noted Hopi-Tewa carver Fletcher Healing Jr. (1907–2005).

This colorful seated Koshare/clown figure measures approximately 16 inches tall and 9 inches wide and features an elaborate watermelon theme. The figure holds a painted watermelon slice in one hand and a blue object in the other, with an additional large watermelon positioned across the lap.

The carving incorporates numerous mixed-media details including painted wood, yarn, cornhusk/straw elements, beads, leather and decorative metal accents. Particularly striking features include the tall black-and-white striped head elements, red and black yarn hair, blue painted shorts, white boots with metal ornaments, wrist decoration and detailed necklace.

Fletcher Healing Jr. is a documented Hopi-Tewa artist known for carved clown/Koshare figures and is associated with the well-known Nampeyo family of Hopi artists.

This is an especially impressive example due to its large 16-inch size, extensive applied decoration and strong visual presence.
