The Pulitzer Prize-Winning Korean War Image: Desfor\'s most famous photograph, Flight of Refugees Across Wrecked Bridge in Korea, was captured on December 4, 1950. While retreating south with United Nations forces near Pyongyang, he encountered thousands of civilians desperately clambering over the twisted, shattered girders of a bombed bridge across the freezing Taedong River to escape advancing Chinese and North Korean troops. Operating in sub-freezing temperatures that made his camera difficult to maneuver, Desfor climbed a 50-foot section of the bridge to capture the harrowing human toll of the conflict. The image earned him the 1951 Pulitzer Prize for Photography.
Max Desfor (1913–2018) was a celebrated American photojournalist whose career with the Associated Press spanned over four decades. He is best known for his unflinching documentation of mid-20th-century conflicts and historical turning points across Asia, most notably his iconic coverage of the Korean War.
