Antique transfer-printed Frank Cooper’s Oxford Home-Made Seville Marmalade jar, manufactured by Maling of Newcastle upon Tyne, dating approximately to the turn of the twentieth century.
The cylindrical cream-white earthenware body carries an attractive black transfer-printed advertising label reading “Frank Cooper’s Oxford Home Made Seville Marmalade”, together with “Warranted Pure”, “Prepared Only by Frank Cooper Limited Oxford” and “Registered Trade Mark.”
The decoration also incorporates the company’s armorial-style device and period typography, giving the jar considerable visual presence as an example of historic British food packaging.
Frank Cooper’s marmalade became closely associated with Oxford and is one of the best-known historic English marmalade brands. Ceramic jars such as this were used before disposable glass and modern packaging became dominant, making surviving examples interesting both as advertising pieces and as documents of Victorian and Edwardian domestic consumption.
The base bears an impressed Maling Newcastle mark. Maling was one of the major pottery manufacturers on Tyneside and produced large quantities of commercial containers for British food and preserve companies.
The glaze displays extensive age-related crazing throughout, now attractively toned in warm brown shades. This has given the jar a particularly decorative surface and strongly aged appearance while leaving the printed advertising clearly legible.

Condition
Very good antique condition overall with no visible cracks or significant chips. The glaze shows extensive and even age-related crazing throughout, together with brown staining and discolouration within the crazed surface, particularly around the rim and interior. There are minor surface marks, manufacturing irregularities and signs of historic use consistent with age. The black transfer-printed decoration remains clear and highly legible.
