French Transferware Tureen St Amand
A large soup tureen base produced at the St Amand faience works in northern France, decorated in the blue transferware tradition that the region\'s potteries made their own from the mid-19th century onward. The French transferware tureen St Amand style is well represented here, with the dense all-over floral print typical of the manufactory\'s output for domestic dining services.
The body is cream-colored ironstone earthenware, printed in a deep slate-blue with cascading bouquets of open roses, smaller blossoms and serrated foliage arranged in a garland pattern around the exterior. The same motif continues across the wide oval foot ring. Two scroll handles, molded in relief and partially printed with trailing vine sprigs, are positioned on opposite sides of the bowl. The interior is undecorated, showing the warm ivory glaze of the base clay. The glaze surface carries the light crazing and minor age spotting consistent with a piece of this period and age. No chips, cracks or repairs are visible in the photos, though normal signs of use and age are present throughout.
The seller notes dimensions of 23cm x 14cm measured without the handles, which converts to approximately 9.1\" x 5.5\". With handles included, the overall width extends to approximately 30cm / 11.8\". This is the tureen base only; no lid is included or shown.
A piece of this scale works well as a centerpiece fruit or display bowl, and it represents a category of transferware that attracts collectors of French provincial ceramics and blue-and-white tableware more broadly. St Amand pieces with strong floral transfer prints in this format are consistently sought on both the French and international secondary market.
