French archaeologist & writer Gaston Deschamps SIGNED letter to James Hazen Hyde For Sale

This is a signed letter by the notableFrencharchaeologist and writer Gaston Deschamps(1861-1931).Deschamps published manyarticles and books, and conducted archaeologicalexcavations in Amorgos, Chios and in Anatolia.PLEASE NOTE:This letter is written in French.
The letter was written to James Hazen Hyde(1876-1959), the son of prominent businessmanHenry Baldwin Hyde (1834-1899).
When his father died,James Hazen Hydeinheritedthe majority shares in the EquitableLife Assurance Society. Five years later, atthe pinnacle of social and financial success,efforts to remove him from The Equitable setin motion the first great Wall Street scandalof the 20th century, which ultimately resultedin Hyde\'sresignation from The Equitable,and subsequentrelocation to France.
Members of The Equitable\'s board of directors,including J.P. Morgan, Henry Clay Frick, E. H.Harriman, and company President JamesWaddell Alexander, attempted to wrest controlfrom Hyde through a variety of means, includingan unsuccessful attempt to have him appointedto be the U.S. Ambassador to France.
On the last night of January 1905, Hyde hosteda highly publicized Versailles-themed costumeball. Falsely accused via a coordinated smearcampaign of charging the highly expensive partyto the company, Hyde soon found himself drawninto a maelstrom of allegations of his supposedcorporate wrongdoing. These allegations nearlycaused a major Wall Street panic.
Hyde had studied French history, language,andliterature, and was involved in efforts toestablish an exchange program that enabledFrench authors and educators to lecture atuniversities in the United States, withAmerican professors reciprocating atuniversities in France. Hyde\'s efforts includedthe endowment of a fund to defray professor\'sexpenses, and he received the Legion of Honor(Chevalier) from the government of France.
While living in France, Hyde became the patronof Gaston Deschamps, as well as many otherscholars.The letter is handwritten on both sides of
a French telegram. Please check out thescans for moreinformation.
Gaston Deschamps wrote and signed thisletter in blue ink. Unfortunately, he did notdate the letter, and I cannot make out a datein the telegraph stamps. It would presumablybe between 1905 at the earliest, and 1931at the latest. My best guess is that it datesto before World War I.The handwriting of Deschamps is tiny, butit is also very neat. If you can read French(unfortunately, I cannot), you should haveno trouble reading this letter, assuming youreyesightis reasonably good.The letter is about 5\" by 4.5\". It is in goodcondition, with a crease where it was folded,and some general wear.This telegram/letter comes with a certificateof authenticityfrom JG Autographs.
