Patented in 1923 by I.C. Gellman.The Gellman Wrench Corporation, founded in the early 1920s in Rock Island, Illinois (later Chicago), was known for producing patented adjustable wrenches, including internal spring models in 6, 9, and 12-inch sizes. The Polly name came from its similarity to a parrot head. The company changed its name to Gellman Manufacturing Co. in September 1924, and by 1930, it was also manufacturing other items like can openers.
