Hand-carved in Kenya, this abstract giraffe sculpture reduces the animal to one continuous curve — a swirling loop of a body, with a short ridge of raised, hand-tooled texture running along the neck like a giraffe\'s mane, a small carved head/ear detail at the top, and a second curved element suggesting the legs. The inside of the curl is left smooth and polished, showing off the stone\'s natural cream color and soft grain variation.
- Stands just under 5\" tall
- 100% hand carved, natural undyed stone
- Country of origin: Kenya
This piece is carved from a dense grade of Kisii stone — the material traded as \"Kisii soapstone\" — quarried in the Tabaka Hills of Kisii County, southwestern Kenya. It\'s harder and less soapy than the classic soft steatite most people picture when they hear \"soapstone,\" which means it also holds fine detail and resists wear a little better. No two pieces carve or polish quite the same, so this one is genuinely one of a kind.
Condition: Used, with a crack visible mainly from the inside of the curl — the exterior carving texture camouflages it well from that side. See photos for a close look at both the interior and exterior of the affected area.
