This postcard shows the exterior of the yellow Glen Iris Inn with its white columns, surrounded by autumn trees, a pond, and a tall fountain in Castile, New York.The Glen Iris Inn, situated atop a cliff overlooking the Middle Falls of the Genesee River, was originally the country estate of Buffalo businessman and philanthropist William Pryor Letchworth. In 1858, while traveling over the gorge on an Erie Railroad train, Letchworth observed the natural landscape of the area and the rainbows forming in the mist of the falls. He purchased the property in 1859, naming it "Glen Iris" after the Greek goddess of rainbows, and spent decades restoring the landscape that had been heavily logged, planting thousands of trees and creating a rural retreat.In 1906, to protect the land from impending hydroelectric dam development, Letchworth bequeathed his 1,000-acre estate to the State of New York. This generous gift formed the heart of what is now Letchworth State Park, often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the East".Following Letchworth's death in 1910, the estate was preserved for public use. Today, the Glen Iris Inn continues to welcome visitors as a country inn and restaurant, a tradition that began in 1914.
