SO WHAT IS A CHAPAN?

A chapan is a traditional Uzbek robe. Previously considered exclusively men's clothing, in the modern world, women have begun to embrace the chapan. It is a simple robe with straight sleeves, no buttons or fastenings. However, the chapan has two straps across the chest that can be tied. Vertical slits are located on the sides of the hips to allow freedom of movement while walking. The robe is cut with an overlap, protecting the wearer from the piercing wind. For warmth, chapans are usually lined with cotton wool or camel wool. All chapan fabric is carefully hand-stitched by Uzbek artisans. In Uzbekistan, chapans are often inscribed with messages wishing well to the wearer.

Chapans can be luxurious or designed for everyday wear.

Luxurious or festive chapans are made from the finest silk adras or from luxurious, shimmering scarlet bakhmal (Uzbek velvet); the lining is also tastefully selected from beautiful fabric. The edges are decorated with hand-woven braid with silk tassels. Festive chapans are adorned with hand embroidery in gold thread and are considered especially luxurious. Everyday chapans are made from a simpler fabric—velour or cotton adras—and the lining is made of calico.
