HARBINGER #0–8 — 9 ISSUE EARLY VALIANT LOT — 1992Offered here is a 9-issue lot of Harbinger #0 through #8, representing the beginning of one of the most important titles of the original Valiant era.Harbinger was particularly significant to the emergence of Valiant in the early 1990s. Harbinger #1 was Valiant’s first original-universe title, and the series helped establish the interconnected Valiant Universe that became one of the biggest comic-book success stories of the early ’90s. Written by former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter, with David Lapham among the principal artists, the series introduced Peter Stanchek/Sting and the young Harbinger rebels battling Toyo Harada and the Harbinger Foundation. Harbinger #1 contains the first team appearance of the Renegades and first appearances of Peter/Sting, Faith/Zephyr, Flamingo, Torque and Kris Hathaway. Another great piece of early-Valiant history is the famous Harbinger #0 mail-away promotion. Issues #1–6 originally contained coupons which could be collected and redeemed for the scarce pink-cover Harbinger #0. This lot includes:* Harbinger #0 — approx. 8.5 VF+ — Blue-cover edition. Attractive copy with minor spine/edge rubbing and small corner wear. Flat, clean copy with strong color and nice pages. This blue edition was originally distributed with the Harbinger trade paperback.
* Harbinger #1 — approx. 8.0 VF — COUPON INTACT — The major key of the lot. First appearances. Multiple small color-breaking spine ticks/light spine wear and minor upper-left wear. Otherwise an attractive copy. Original Harbinger #0 mail-away coupon remains present.
* Harbinger #2 — approx. 8.5 VF+ — COUPON INTACT — Several small spine stresses with light spine/edge and corner wear. Attractive overall presentation. First appearances of Rock, Swallow and Sparrow.
* Harbinger #3 — approx. 8.0 VF — COUPON INTACT — More noticeable color-breaking stress toward the upper spine along with several smaller ticks and minor corner wear. First appearance of Ax.
* Harbinger #4 — approx. 7.5 VF- — COUPON INTACT — More distributed color-breaking spine rubbing/stress and some upper-left wear. Covers and interior remain clean and present nicely.
* Harbinger #5 — approx. 8.0 VF — COUPON REMOVED — Spine ticks/rubbing, some lower-left wear and a small top-edge nick. Interior/pages otherwise clean. Please note that the original mail-away coupon has been removed.
* Harbinger #6 — approx. VF range — Attractive copy showing relatively minor handling/spine and edge wear consistent with the rest of this set. This is an important story issue featuring the death of Torque.
* Harbinger #7 — approx. VF/VF+ range — Strong eye appeal with bright color and generally clean surfaces; light spine/edge wear and small handling defects visible under close inspection. Back cover remains attractive.
* Harbinger #8 — approx. 8.5 VF+ — Bright, glossy and attractive copy. Several small color-breaking spine ticks/light spine wear plus a few subtle non-color-breaking impressions. Corners and edges remain quite nice. Back cover is especially clean and strong. Interior appears clean and firmly attached. Why this lot mattersThis isn’t simply a group of miscellaneous 1990s comics. These are the first nine issues, #0 through #8, of a foundational Valiant series, including the key #1 and the early coupon issues. The early Harbinger books came from the period when Valiant was building its reputation around tight continuity, recurring characters and interconnected storytelling. Harbinger #1 in particular remains one of the cornerstone books of original Valiant collecting. The relatively modest print runs of these earliest issues—especially compared with the enormous print runs associated with many later 1990s comics—also helped make early Valiant books particularly sought after by collectors. A current Valiant collector guide estimates approximately 48,000 copies of #1, with several subsequent early issues estimated around 35,000–40,000 copies. Please examine all photographs carefully. The actual books pictured are the books you will receive.GRADING DISCLAIMER: I am not a professional comic book grader.
