Herman Red Elk Painted Hide 1966-67 Signed Yanktonai Sioux Native American Plain:
$1235.00

The painted scene depicts mounted warriors, horses in motion, bows and arrows, a tipi, and additional figures in a narrative Plains pictographic style. The composition is executed primarily in black outline with turquoise, yellow, red, and pale blue accents. The hide measures approximately 46–47 inches at its widest point and approximately 32–34 inches high.

The reverse bears the handwritten attribution, location, date, and number noted above. The dating places the work in the same general period in which Red Elk was actively studying, reviving, and producing traditional hide paintings. His documented work from the 1960s is represented in museum and institutional collections, including the Sioux Indian Museum.

The hide retains its natural irregular shape and edges. Condition is consistent with age and use, including scattered holes, edge losses, minor tears, surface wear, and natural irregularities to the hide. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

This piece has not been formally authenticated by an independent expert, so it is being offered based on the clear period inscription and the visible characteristics of the work. Prospective buyers are encouraged to conduct their own research and evaluation.

A distinctive mid-20th-century Plains-style painted hide with a strong period inscription and an unusual connection to Herman Red Elk’s documented work in traditional Native American hide painting.

Approximate dimensions: 46–47" wide x 32–34" high
Inscription: “By Herman Red Elk / Rapid City / So. Dak. / 1966–67 / #011”
Medium: Painted hide
Condition: Age-related hide wear, holes, edge losses, tears and irregularities as shown

I am happy to provide additional close-up photographs of the inscription, painted details, reverse, edges, and condition upon request.
